Triple-S now has a tool to help answer this question. You can test sector-wide policies and practices using the new beta version of Triple-S’ “WASH sustainability assessment tool”. The tool indicates where policies and practices are strong and where improvements can be made.

You can assess WASH sector performance in eight categories:

  1. Policy, legislation, and instructions
  2. Financing for full life-cycle costs
  3. Planning
  4. Transparency and accountability
  5. Capacity
  6. Sector learning and knowledge management
  7. Harmonisation and alignment
  8. Environment

The WASH sustainability assessment tool is part of a suite of evaluation tools for analysing WASH-related work and understanding sustainability issues—other tools include sustainablewash.org’s self-assessment tool for sustainability and UNICEF’s sustainability check (available below) . While the self-assessment tool for sustainability focuses on organisations and the sustainability check analyses projects, Triple-S’s sustainability assessment tool looks at the sector.

Harold Lockwood of Triple-S and Aguaconsult explained that making these tools public marks major progress for the WASH sector. “The fact that these tools exist shows the greater interest in addressing sustainability issues across the sector. This is a big step forward from ten years ago, where the sector was very much project focused”, said Lockwood.

Triple-S is currently working to further develop the beta version of the WASH sustainability assessment tool. (You can download the WASH sustainability assessment tool from the link below).
