Abstract

This report presents key statistical data on socio-economics, health care, international aid, nutrition, water supply and sanitation facilities, child care, and education in Viet Nam. The impact of economic reforms and the role of women in the economy are analysed. The political framework, the legal position of women, and efforts to observe women's and children's rights are outlined. Improved access to safe water is one of the greatest perceived needs of the Vietnamese people. Problems related to the lack of safe water and adequate environmental sanitation, particularly in remote coastal and mountainous areas, have a severe impact on the health situation of the population. Only 45-50 per cent of the urban population have access to piped water supplies. Most systems are in a poor condition and some have no treatment facilities at all. A description of water supply systems and water resources in urban and rural areas provides an overview of the situation. Other topics dealt with are institutional issues like mobilization, community participation, financing, and access to environmental sanitation. Types of latrines and their correlation with intestinal parasite infection are also discussed. Emphasis is put on community participation, capacity building, and the coordination, control and distribution of materials. The document also features health education in primary schools to instill good sanitary habits and practices.
