Abstract

This volume builds on the theme of participation in development through communication in meaningful and culturally specific ways. The introduction stresses the importance of cultural identity and democratization at all levels. The first part of the book presents theoretical perspectives in relation to policy issues and political ideologies. The second part explores diverse methodological perspectives including current debates in the social sciences, approaches to participatory research, the interactive role of the indigenous farmer and the scientific researcher, and a discussion on animation and leadership in community development. The final part presents five significant case studies which articulate specific experiences in interfacing theory with practice.
