Abstract

On the basis of 3 surveys in rural Mali, a national plan has been drawn up to provide 45% of the population with drinking water supplies and improved primary health care. It is intended that the responsibility for the projected schemes be shared by the people and the State. Some outcomes of the epidemiological, social and socioeconomic surveys were: 17% of the days of good health lost was attributable to malaria; in all villages the importance of a good water supply was expressed; 98% of the respondents stated that they were prepared to contribute financially to a water project.
