Abstract

A water consumption study was carried out in 9 villages in Niger during the cold season to determine the impact of the Village Hydraulic Program (PHV) as well as to determine consumption. Two sorts of questionnaires were used; a short one for interviews at the water station, and a longer one for interviews in the home. Methods of determination and detailed information for each village are presented in the body of the report. Household consumption varied by the matter of study from 18.7 litres per person per day (lpd) acording to the administrative census, to 23.3 lpd as determined by the water station surveys, to 25.1 lpd according to the household studies. Animal consumption was estimated at 7.9 litres per day per animal for goats and sheep. It was found that the PHV had an impact on the villages in the sense of encouraging use of the pumps, and stimulating interest in gardening and animal husbandry.
