Abstract

This report documents activities related to three pilot projects conducted in urban areas in the Democratic Republic of Congo under USAID/DRC¿s Urban Environmental Health Strategy: the Action Against Hunger Kinshasa Markets Water and Sanitation Project; the International Rescue Committee (IRC) Barumbu Environmental Health Pilot Project; and the IRC Kananga Water Supply and Hygiene Education Project. It reports on design, implementation, impacts and lessons learned about program design and flexibility; information, education, communication (IEC) and hygiene behavior change; strengthening local partners and community ownership; the financial sustainability of interventions; and survey evaluations and follow-up. The projects were focusing on improving infrastructure and behaviors and on their sustainability. The results provide clear evidence of the success of this approach.
