Abstract

Why people do or don’t use toilets, wash or don’t wash their hands? The session will be an open and frank debate on the precise behaviours that sanitation practitioners are looking to impact. We know that technology alone does not work. Handwashing and fixed point defecation is a start,  but ensuring everyone has, and uses, anappropriate toilet depends on achieving multiple behaviour changes at a broad scale. People’s every day habits and choices are based on what they like, need or want, not on what they know is ‘right’. A better grasp of the human dimension is key to successfully achieving sustainable impacts in sanitation behavior change. [authors abstract]
