A sector-wide approach, commonly called a SWAp, aims for more efficient use of resources from national budgets, user contributions and development partners, thus maximising the overall investment in the water, sanitation and hygiene sector towards achieving sustainable services for all.

The sector-wide approach supports governments to lead their own development in a coordinated manner. It is a way of working where funding for the sector, both from government and donor, is pooled to support a single sector policy and a sector expenditure programme.

IRC works with governments and donors to apply a sector wide approach towards achieving sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene services for all, forever.
