The international 'think and do tank' exists to support universal access to sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene services (WASH). It works with governments, NGOs, businesses and others to promote sustainable WASH service development rather than short-term project delivery.

A predicted reduction in government funding from 2016 and the end of two major research programmes have come at the same time as a desire to see a smaller Netherlands based team and greater emphasis and resources given to its work 'on the ground' in countries in the developing world.

IRC has therefore taken the difficult decision to reduce staff in the Netherlands. 19 staff will have left IRC by early 2015, as part of the re-organisation. This will be a difficult time for those individuals and for colleagues across the IRC family.

The Management Team is offering affected staff a social plan that provides a redundancy settlement that is compassionate and fair. Speaking about the changes IRC CEO Patrick Moriarty says:

"While this process will be difficult – losing 19 staff should never sit easily – it will allow us to adapt flexibly to new opportunities in the WASH sector and for our country teams to take a stronger leadership role in the promotion of IRC's mission. It is right and proper that the voices of those in the countries we work in are central to driving change and improvement."

IRC is well equipped and will continue to deliver the wide-range of services for the WASH sector in more than 20 countries across the world, bringing its distinctive mix of strategic knowledge in promoting sustainable services and deep experience of getting the job done on the ground.
