The 5th edition of the annual Uganda Water and Environment Week is set for 20 – 25 March 2022, in Kampala, Uganda. Every year since 2018, the Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE) through its Water Resources Institute (WRI) convenes sector state and non-state actors, researchers, development partners, policy analysts, the media and institutions to dialogue, interrogate evidence and forge a way forward on harnessing Uganda’s water and environment resources sustainably, for national development.

The overall theme of UWEWK 2022 is “Water and Environment for peace and socio-economic transformation of Uganda”, with sessions organized under four sub themes, namely

  • Sub-theme1: Promoting peace and stability through water and environment resources
  • Sub-theme2: Building resilience to various risks and shocks
  • Sub-theme3: Financing Water, Environment and Climate Change
  • Sub-theme4: Partnerships and inter-sectoral collaboration in water and environment management and development

IRC as a core partner of the MWE/WRI is a sponsor in the Silver category, and co-chair of the thematic session on Financing Water, Environment and Climate Change (Sub-theme III). This is scheduled on Thursday 24 March 2022 and moderated by Jane Nabunnya Mulumba, Country Director IRC Uganda.

IRC’s work is also prominently featured in Sub-theme IV on “Partnerships and inter-sectoral collaboration in water and environment management and development” scheduled Friday 25 March 2022 at which IRC CEO Dr Patrick Moriarty will deliver the keynote address and Kabarole District Chairman Richard Rwabuhinga will be a panelist.

In addition to the national event, IRC is participating in and supporting precursor awareness activities in the Albertine region in collaboration with the ministry regional structures and Kabarole District Local Government, ongoing from 13 – 20 March 2022.

The UWEWK is part of IRC Uganda’s core programming towards the agenda of wholistic WASH systems strengthening and influencing specifically for integrated water resources management and increased financing for water sanitation and hygiene.

The UWEWK is a hybrid event with provision for virtual participation via Zoom.
