Webinar addresses the funding challenges of India's flagship rural water and sanitation initiatives.

The Government of India has renewed its commitment to rural water and sanitation with the flagship schemes - Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) and Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), for sanitation and water, respectively. What are the various sources of funds available to cover the costs of these ambitious government initiatives, what are the funds available to sustain them, what and where are the gaps in the funds, and how can these be addressed? These questions were discussed during a webinar organised by Water for People, IRC and the SuSanA India Chapter on 16 June 2022.
More than 120 participants from across the country listened to expert presentations from civil society organisations and government, and local government elected representatives. Following an overview of national level sources of finance, there were case studies from the states of West Bengal, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Odisha (see webinar programme).
A series of recommendations emerged from the webinar to strengthen the provision of sustainable water and sanitation services to everyone. The recommendations are included in the synthesis report of the webinar, which you can find below under Resources.
