Abstract

Knowledge is the currency of the 21st century and the power to discover hidden abilities, untapped passions, and undiscovered purpose of any organization. With knowledge as its most important resource, UNICEF is embarking upon the fulfilment of the 2030 Agenda and is in a pivotal position to leverage and develop this asset to improve national and international efforts on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals related to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH).

In the new UNICEF Strategic Plan 2022-25, UNICEF has renewed its commitment to being a global knowledge leader, a facilitator and a convener for children and this is well reflected in the Global Knowledge Management Medium-Term strategy 2021-2022. The strategy aims to put knowledge to work to achieve rights and results for children, globally.

This Global WASH Knowledge Management Strategy 2022-2025 is very well aligned with the organisation wide drive in putting UNICEF's actions on the best available data and evidence to influence policies and actions in favour of children and the unserved communities within the broader development and humanitarian contexts. While the primary audience of this strategy are UNICEF staff working on WASH in more than 170 countries, UNICEF also believes that this strategy contributes to its partners in the field, its global and local knowledge partners, and its financial supporters in joining hands to advance the wisdom gained by working in different settings and contexts globally.

This WASH Knowledge Management Strategy starts with a brief overview of knowledge management (KM) within WASH and KM within UNICEF. This is followed by a more detailed assessment of the current status of WASH KM practices, a description of the strategic elements of WASH KM (pillars, enablers, partnerships and monitoring) and a concluding section on implementing the strategy. A glossary of terms is included in an annex.
